Mendocino's calendar girls

When leaders at the Mendocino Art Center, got together to brainstorm a fund-raising gimmick to mark the art gallery and school's 50th anniversary, one of the ideas that came up was a calendar. Naturally. It always does.

Mendocino photographer Larry Wagner wanted to take a different approach. Last October, Wagner started working with his models, artists and arts patrons from the Mendocino Coast.

Loraine Toth, ceramic sculptor and proprietor of an art gallery in Elk, created a plastic breastplate to wear in her colorful portrait.

Jessica Jade Norris, an artist who works in pen and inks, watercolors and block prints, posed as a mermaid.

And Sunshine Taylor, well-known North Coast painter and dancer, and her husband, Glenn Rude, appear in a dramatic dance pose titled "Moonstruck."

"Remember the 'Calendar Girls' movie? That was a beautiful thing, but the pictures were predictable Once you've seen one, you've practically seen 'em all," Wagner said.

Hence, the 20-month, 2010-11 Mendocino Art Center 50th Anniversary Exotic Calendar, due for publication Aug. 1 at $25.

"I sent out a note to all the artists and said, 'The Mendocino Art Center needs the shirts off your backs.' But my intent was that it be exotic. Some of the pictures would be nudes and some would be all sorts of things," Wagner said.

Other calendars have themes, where all of the pictures are kind of the same. With this, nothing is the same," Wagner said.

The artists trusted him, because they knew him. He has a history in the arts community there.

"I published two books, 'Artists of the Mendocino Coast," volumes 1 and 2, where I did portraits of 138 different artists," Wagner said.

Comment: All of us at the viewing of the calendar thought it was fabulous! The clown who criticized it is obviously one of these guys who criticize because it's easier than to create. We all know what a huge amount of work it was to do what Larry did and we got the results that we wanted.

Comment: I attended the unveiling of Larry Wanger's Exotic Calendar, at the Mendocino Art Center, and it was a gala artistic event on many levels not the least of which was witnessing a man in his 70s inspire us all by creating a totally new career. The photos themselves are each a work of art and worthy of framing either individually or as a group. The calendar is a photographic work of art whose subject matter is artists.

Comment: Working and creating with Larry Wagner has been a great gift. His artistic skills, calm manner, endless ideas, and perseverance, help to make a beautiful end product whether it be one of his photographic portrait books or this exciting new calendar he's produced. He does a fabulous job with any project he undertakes, striving for perfection, which he always attains. It's a privelege to work with Larry, and an honor to be one of the "girls" for the Mendocino Art Center Fundraiser Calendar.

Comment: I've seen all the images in slide form and give kudos to Larry the photo artist and to all the Mendocino Area artists who made this creative, entertaining and beautiful calendar possible. It's one I'll keep even when the 20 months are gone!

Comment: I am excited to buy this calendar and support the M.A.C; some of the brightest and most innovative artists in Northern California, literally selling the shirts off their backs to create this celebration of sensuality and humor. Good for them. The Mendocino Art Center is one of our most valuable resources on the coast to nurture our evolving artists!!!!

Comment: Larry is a master at portrait photography and there is probably no one i have ever meet who is better at photoshop. The person who commented, who is not familiar with what went into creating these beautiful pieces, may not understand the process.

Comment: From what I've seen of the calendar, I think it's just great! Kudos to the art instructors/models and the photographer for putting out a truly fun calendar to support the excellent programs at the Mendocino Art Center.

Comment: I'm sure Larry is an excellent photographer, but the images look like they were assembled by someone with a very basic grasp of photoshop. The gradient in the first is very amateurish, the lack of anti-aliasing in the Mermaid photo is incredibly distracting and the layers on the Moonstruck photo are all mixed up! The moon in front of the building does not look artistic, it looks accidental. The opportunity to use a reflection (of the city/moon) on the dance floor was wasted. Making the floor opaque is just lazy.

What is art? Whether it's oil on canvas or actors on stage, dancers on their toes or comedians doing stand-up, Press Democrat staff writer Dan Taylor covers the fine and lively arts in Northern California. Meet the people, go behind the scenes and get ahead on what's coming up.
